On Thursday, September 27, 2018, the Sacramento County Bar Foundation honored Gary Messing as a Centennial Fellow as part of the Sacramento County Bar Association’s 100-year anniversary centennial celebrations. Gary was one of only eleven attorneys recognized for this first-time distinction awarded to “attorneys at the pinnacle of achievement who, through distinguished professional accomplishment, substantial civic involvement and philanthropy, have earned a legacy as founding pillars of the Sacramento legal community.” This comes on the heels of Gary being named as one of the top 500 plaintiff’s employment lawyers in the United States by Lawdragon, an agency that has been ranking attorneys in the U.S. for over a decade. In honoring Gary, the Foundation noted his selection as a Fellow in the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, of which he is the only union lawyer and one of only six labor and employment lawyers in Northern California – outside of the Bay Area – to be included.
The Bar Foundation had the following to say about Gary:
Gary M. Messing is a founding partner of Messing Adam & Jasmine LLP, where his practice focuses on representing public sector employee organizations and their members. In a prolific four-decade career, [Gary] has been at the forefront of public sector labor law, and he served as lead counsel in Shoemaker v. Myers (1990) 52 Cal.3d 1 and White v. Davis (2003) 30 Cal.4th 528, two landmark California Supreme Court cases affecting the rights of public employees. He was also lead counsel in Parr v. State of California (1992) 811 F.Supp. 507, a case in the Eastern District that successfully challenged the issuance of IOUs to State employees during a budget impasse.
[Gary] has served the legal community in a variety of capacities. He is a past chairperson of the Sacramento County Bar Association Labor and Employment Section, and served as the national Union Co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Committee on State and Local Bargaining within the Labor and Employment Law Section. In 2014, Gary was elected as a Fellow of the prestigious College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. He has been named to Best Lawyers in America, and for many years as a Northern California Super Lawyer. He is a frequent panelist and commentator on labor and employment issues, with significant expertise in issues relating to public safety officers.
[Gary] earned his undergraduate degree from Amherst College, and his law degree from Columbia University School of Law. Before founding Messing Adam & Jasmine LLP, Gary worked for Carroll Burdick & McDonough LLP, where he opened and managed the firm’s Sacramento office.
MAJ is proud of it’s partner Gary’s recognition in the legal community and very pleased to share this recent honor with you now.
